Stump grinding in Florence, SC

A stump catches mower blades, sends up sprouts and leaves a hole when it finally rots. Here's how grinding works and what to sort out first.

A stump grinder is a machine with a heavy cutting wheel lined with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps it back and forth across the stump, chewing it into chips until it's below the soil line. Afterward you can rake in topsoil and seed or sod over it, plant nearby, or lay pavers. It's much quicker and less destructive than digging out the whole root ball with an excavator.

Questions to settle before grinding

  • How deep? Lawn needs less depth than a new flower bed, a fence post or a slab. Tell the company what the spot is for.
  • What happens to the chips? Some crews leave them to backfill the hole, some haul them away, and some charge separately.
  • Surface roots? Big roots running across the lawn are often priced as an add-on.
  • Who calls SC811? Ask whether the company files the locate request or expects you to.

Why does SC811 matter for a stump?

Grinding is digging, and buried gas, water, power and cable lines often run right past old yard trees. SC811's 2026 quick reference guide says to make a request three to twelve business days before you dig, and that the utilities get three full business days to respond. It also sets a tolerance zone of 24 inches on each side of a marked line, plus half the width of the line itself. Utilities only mark the public lines they own, so private lines such as a sprinkler system or a line to a detached shop may need a private locator. South Carolina updated its dig law in 2026, so confirm the current rules at SC811 before work starts.

Sandy ground, wet spots and gates

Grinders come in sizes from small units that fit through a 36-inch backyard gate to big tracked machines for large stumps. Low yards near creeks and swamps can stay soft for days after heavy rain. Tell the company about gates, steps, slopes and septic tanks before they arrive.

Is the stump part of the removal?

Not always. When you get a tree removal quote, ask whether grinding is included or listed separately. Pine stumps also shouldn't be left as beetle habitat next to healthy pines; Clemson suggests clearing infested slash and downed wood near standing trees.

The tree company sets the price after it has seen the tree, what it could hit and how a truck, lift or grinder can reach it. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone before anyone has looked at the job is only a guess.

Common questions

Will the stump sprout after grinding?

Some hardwoods can send up shoots from leftover roots. Grinding deeper and cutting sprouts as they appear usually ends it. Southern pines such as loblolly generally don't resprout from the stump.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

It's usually better to plant a few feet away from the chip-filled hole. If you plan to replant, ask the crew to grind deeper and pull out chips.
